Nonantum Resort selects local artist
to help Commemorate 125th Anniversary
KENNEBUNKPORT: When the Nonantum Resort
began planning this year’s 125th
anniversary, the resort owners and staff
recognized that a work of art to depict the
historical waterfront resort would be
appropriate. They looked no further than the
local art community and invited local
artists to depict The Nonantum at some time
during its 125 years of hospitality.
An artist reception was held at the Nonantum
on Sunday, June 8, to salute the
participating artists and select one for the
resort lobby. Six local artists submitted
their renderings and each of these works
were displayed for staff members and the
resort owners, to view and select the one
work of art they felt best commemorates the
125th anniversary.
Among the entries were J Scott Bang’s portrayal
of the Inn, a porch scene by Peter Hoff, the
Nonantum lighthouse by Ellen Pelletier, the
Kennebunk River view by R. Rowland, a spring
rendition by Mary Gamon, and a primitive
painting of the Nonantum on opening day in
1884 by Jean Colquhoun.
Tim Ames, Nonantum Director of Sales, made
the announcement that Jean Colquhoun of
Sanford, Maine, was the winner for her
primitive painting of the original inn as
the best illustration to mark the 125th
anniversary. Colquhoun’s depiction of the
Nonantum was purchased by the resort and
will be used throughout the season long
celebration as the anniversary symbol.
“These artists all did a wonderful job
capturing the history and the timeless
setting of the Nonantum, we appreciate the
work and care they put into each of their
renditions,” said Tina Hewett-Gordon,
General Manager at the Nonantum. All of the
entries will be displayed at the Nonatum for
guests and visitors to enjoy.
The Nonantum has a history of supporting and
welcoming local artists. The Resort hosts a
weekly Sunday morning buffet “Breakfasts
with an Artist” which features a different
local artist each week. A Garden Party is
planned for August 24, when guests are
invited to sip Champagne and preview local
art displayed on the Nonantum riverfront
lawn, reminiscent of the French
impressionist days.
During Christmas prelude, The Nonantum holds
a Holiday Arts Show with local artists
displaying their work for sale. The Nonantum
also participated in The Art in the Inns
event recently by hosting a Chef’s night
featuring an artist, and by displaying
artwork by local artist Mimi Gregoire-Carpentier.
“We have tremendous local talent in our
community, and we look for opportunities to
allow them to showcase their works at our
Resort. Their art enriches the experience of
our guests and their depictions capture some
of the timelessness of our resort and our
seaside town,” said Jean Ginn Marvin, owner
of the Nonantum Resort.
